#Drawlloween 2015: Day 13: Frankenstein #31DaysofHorror

Ah, Frankenstein. I've said it before and I'll say it again. You're either a Frankenstein person or a Dracula person. I'm a Frankenstein person, myself, and try to influence my students to come to the science fiction side of horror. Since I

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 12: Moon #31DaysofHorror

Not much to say here. It's the moon. I can draw it. Compressed chalk and pastel pencil on toned gray paper. 5.5"x8.5"

Halloween 2015: Broodhollow Haunt Part 2 #31DaysofHorror

It's been a productive week bringing this wild Broodhollow haunt to life. First, I got half of The Last Halloween cemetery done. Why half? Because I have another 6 or 7 stones to paint for the other side of the walkway, plus a few more figures to clean

#31DaysofHorror Tetsuo: The Iron Man Review (Film, 1989)

There's no sense trying to define a plot for Tetsuo: The Iron Man. It's essentially a series of very 80s experimental video shorts strung together into a very loose thematic structure. One man chooses to inject himself with metal, while another transforms into metal. That'

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 10: Alien #31DaysofHorror

Don't blame me. I'm not the one who created American Horror Story: Asylum, forever conflating aliums with whiny characters and animal mutilation. Graphite crayon on toned gray paper. 5.5"x8.5"

Watch: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Trailer #31DaysofHorror

The wait isn't over yet, but it certainly seems to finally be coming to an end. Remember when everyone had a good laugh that someone updated Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice to include zombies all the way back in 2009? And remember how many people picked

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 9: Eyeball #31DaysofHorror

When I saw the theme for Drawlloween Day 9 was eyeball, I knew what I had to do. I love drawing eyes. I'm good at it, too. I wanted to get another entry done for the Chiller Theatre Expo art contest and, from my experience there, they respond

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 8: Zombie #31DaysofHorror

I crashed hard after a long practice yesterday and forgot to upload my Day 8 zombie sketch for Drawlloween. Here it is now. Compressed chalk and charcoal on toned gray paper. 5.5"x8.5"

Watch: Bumps Gonna Goose Ya! feat. Jack Black #31DaysofHorror

I don't have high hopes for the new Goosebumps film. I like the property (I grew up reading the original series, plus all of Fear Street). I think Jack Black will be great in this R.L. Stine role. My concerns all come from trying to include too

#31DaysofHorror Evidence Review (Film, 2013)

If it wasn't for the last two minutes of Evidence, I would be writing a very complimentary review. Unfortunately, I cannot write a review of a film that technically doesn't exist, as those last two minutes literally ruin everything positive Evidence had going for it. Evidence

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 7: Haunted House #31DaysofHorror

I have plans for a much larger piece inspired by the Bates Motel in Psycho. I figured Haunted House day in #Drawlloween was a good place to start. The proportions are a bit too squat, but the idea came out pretty easily. I would use a ruler and actually work

#31DaysofHorror Starry Eyes Review (Film, 2014)

One of the big writing tips you learn over and over again is steal from the best. Study the masters. Find a work you really love, learn it inside and out, and apply it to your own work. There's obviously no real way to know if writers/directors

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 6: Pumpkin #31DaysofHorror

Another day, another spoopy drawing. Only this one isn't spoopy at all. It's actually my most straight forward entry in Drawlloween so far. The theme for day 6 is pumpkin. I delivered in sanguine. Compressed chalk on toned gray paper. 5.5"x8.5"

Halloween 2015: Broodhollow Haunt #31DaysofHorror

I don't know if/when I'll get a new episode of The Haunting Ground up, though I'd like to think the existing series entries are a great tool for novice home haunters. What I do know is that I feel the need to start

#31DaysofHorror Shutter Review (Film, 2004)

Photography often plays an important role in film. Some truly great films actually focus on the act of photography itself, including Rear Window, Blow-Up, and Fur (among countless documentaries). It's surprising that more horror films don't focus on irregularities in photographs. Sinister/2  and Ginger

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 5: Werewolf #31DaysofHorror

Do you even lift, brah? I didn't intend to create a super buff werewolf, but once the shape started to come through, I couldn't resist. Vine charcoal and compressed chalk on toned gray paper. 5.5"x8.5"

Must Watch: Twin Peaks Teaser #31DaysofHorror

Ok, so it's really happening now. Production is on for the new season of Twin Peaks. David Lynch is on board. Much of the original cast is returning. Amanda Seyfried is joining in a pivotal role (Veronica Mars, anyone? She was the murder victim who appeared in flashbacks

#31DaysofHorror Magic Review (Film, 1978)

Corky Withers goes from flop magician to the hottest act in the country by making one small change to his act: Fats. Fats is a ventriloquist dummy with a dirty mouth. Corky gets away with some classic illusions handed down to him by an old master using raunchy humor as

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 4: Vampire #31DaysofHorror

I looked at my blank toned gray notebook and said, "there must be a vampire there. But not just any vampire. A vampire in transformation." Certain strains of folklore claim vampires can transform into mist or fog. I figured an especially cool, cheeky vampire might hide from hunters

#31DaysofHorror Darkroom Review (Film, 2014)

In Darkroom, Michelle is forced into a therapy program to avoid jail time for vehicular manslaughter. She got drunk, got behind the wheel, got distracted, and got three of her friends killed. Rachel, the woman who runs the program, is especially hard on Michelle, demanding she publicly ask forgiveness for

#Drawlloween 2015: Day 3: Goblin #31DaysofHorror

Day 3 of Drawlloween is a goblin. I did some digging around last night and discovered that the Chinese equivalent of a goblin is portrayed as a birdlike-humanoid. The motivation and behaviors are the same--protective force, mischievous, collecting small objects. The appearance is different and, to me, far

Horror Icons: Ginger and Brigitte #31DaysofHorror

This month, I want to take a look at some of the characters and creators of horror you should know but might not. Lost to time, region, budget, or overshadowed by other work, these icons deserve recognition on the level of a Wes Craven or Freddy Kreuger. Today's

#Drawlloween Day 2: Devil #31DaysofHorror

Day 2 of #Drawlloween is all about the devil. I played with doing some kind of unexpected twist on the devil, but wound up at pretty straight forward red skin, goatee, and horned devil when the material started to hit the page. I love him. He's so sweet.

#31DaysofHorror V/H/S/2 Review (Film, 2013)

V/H/S/2 is the second entry in a new series of anthology horror films with the same concept. Essentially, there are people in the world not satisfied by the depravity of snuff tapes. They want something more. They collect and trade snuff films with real paranormal elements on
