Welcome to Sketching Details. We are an entertainment media criticism site looking at film, television, games, and more through an academic-style lens.

I am Robert J Gannon (they/them or he/him). I have run Sketching Details on various platforms for over 20 years. I’ve worn many hats in the entertainment industry, including press, playwright, author, critic, performer, composer, designer, and educator. I’m excited to use my perspective from inside and outside of the entertainment industry to create a discussion with you about the media we consume.

I was inspired to start Sketching Details because I noticed a dearth of serious critical discourse about the so called “genre” entertainment: horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. I have built a career and reputation on treating these genres with respect. I am incredibly proud to have had a small part in helping bring about a change in media criticism when it comes to horror, sci-fi, and fantasy and am excited to keep pushing the conversation with you.
